Walter Crane letters, 1889-1899.

The collection contains two letters. Crane writes to Kineton Parkes, 8 Aug. 1889, thanking him for his book on the Pre-Raphaelites, but correcting his comments on Sir John Gilbert; and to Mr. Sauter (or Santer), 22 Oct. 1899, saying he has sent four frames of original drawings for some of his children's books to Messrs. Bradley & Co.

Walter Crane was born in Liverpool on 15 Aug 1845, second son of the portrait painter Thomas Crane and his wife Marie née Kearsley. The family moved first to Torquay, and in 1857 to London. From 1859-62 Crane was apprenticed to the wood engraver William James Linton, although he studied painting at the same time.
